  1. I have in my notes that Swami has commented: the way to overcome the ego is to understand all that is. This was in response to my question about how does one discern when the ego is distorting the Truth. (I've got a long way to go before I understand all that is!) Perhaps the discerning faculty is only as refined as the ego. Contemplation seems to allow time and space for discernment about what the mind and body thinks and does. Swami's suggestions about going back over the day before you go to sleep, to address any actions, words and deeds that might have been done better, have helped me in my practice in becoming more discerning.
